The rate of inflation rose slightly last month.

Government statistics released this morning reveal that the annual rate of inflation measured by the consumer prices index rose from 2.3% in August to 2.4% last month.

The weak pound has had a big effect.

Oil and other fuels - which are sold on world markets in American dollars - are up 22.3%. Petrol is up 9.6%.

According to the figures, potatoes are 6.3% more expensive than in September 2017, while fruit is 9.5% cheaper.

Rents have soared 7,8% while repairs and maintenance are up 4%.

The cost of sea travel has risen 5.7% while air travel has fallen 3.9%.

Meanwhile, there are some oddities.

For instance, while men’s outerwear has got 1.7% more expensive, women’s has shot up 4.7%.
