More than £100,000 was raised for Cancer Research at the Relay for Life event.

A record number of 60 teams and more than 800 people took part in the 24-hour relay. Proceeds from the event are still coming in.

Paula Jones, senior local fundraising manager for the charity, said: ’Cancer Research UK wants to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured and we would like to thank the wonderful Manx community, who are helping us to save many more lives through their year-round fundraising, which funds research taking place in the North West.

’It was an inspirational weekend and I would like to thank everyone involved in making the event such a fantastic success.’

The event started with a lap of honour by cancer survivors. There was a range of themed laps, a silent disco and a Miss Relay competition. At dusk, a candle of hope ceremony saw people light a candle in memory of loved one fighting or lost to cancer.

Lynn Bell, chair of event sponsor PokerStars, said: ’The kindness and generosity the community of the Isle of Man has to offer is insurmountable, and every penny will help bring forward the day that all cancers are cured.’
