A comedy play, written by one of the UK’s best loved playwrights, will be performed in Peel next weekend.
The local amateur dramatic group the Legion Players will perform their version of Willy Russell’s ’One for the Road, at the Peel Centenary Centre, over two nights, on Friday and Saturday, March 1 and 2, from 7.30pm.
Directed by Lindsey Quayle, and starring Chris Elstrop in the lead role, alongside Sarah Radcliffe, Amber Purnell and Neil King, the play is set in a typical surburban housing estate, and features a disaffected man, Dennis, who is approaching his 40s, and realises that he hasn’t led the fulfilling life he once dreamed of.
’Basically, ’One of the road’ is a classic northern comedy about one dinner party too many,’ said Lindsey.
’It is set around a dinner party for Dennis’ birthday. He’s 35 and he suddenly realises that he has done nothing that he wanted to do when he was younger.
’Instead, he has a mortgage, a dishwasher, a coffee machine and all those sort of things.
’Dennis is tired of trying to keep up with everybody else, and wants to go off around the world with a back-pack.
’It is very funny. It does contain some adult humour, so be warned before you come, but it is very funny, and very typical of Willy Russell’s humour.
’It’ll be a good laugh and a good night out.’
Having acted locally for many years, this is Lindsey’s first foray into directing a full play.
She first came across the play when she performed another Willy Russell classic some years ago.
’I first read it when I performed Shirley Valentine, years ago,’ she said.
’I read it and loved it. Since then I have never had the chance to do it. I’ve only directed one act plays before, so this is my first big play.’
Tickets for ’One for the Road are £10, and available from Shakti Mann, in Ramsey, Celtic Gold, in Peel, GH Corletts, in Douglas, Thompson Travel, in Port Erin or online from etickets.im/cc
