Three Manx bikers have presented cheques to a number of charities following their humanitarian van trip to a Syrian refugee camp.
Manx Grand Prix competitor Ian Pert and retired competitors, Ronnie Clucas and Jim Hunter, collected £3,000 through their efforts during a 3,000 mile trip from the Isle of Man to a camp located near to the Syrian border in Turkey.
Jim Hunter and Ronnie Russell presented the cheques at Bilbo’s brews shop in Ramsey this week.
A total of £500 was given to the Manx Grand Prix Supporters Club, £500 to the island’s ACU Benevolent Fund, £500 to The Billy Redmayne Memorial Fund and £1,000 to towards the Syrian refugees.
Another £500 was also donated to the Kent Air Ambulance, which had helped rescue Jim’s son Jack after he was involved in a serious road traffic accident in March last year.
The purpose of the Syria mission was to not only donate supplies and raise money towards the different causes, but to assure 150,000 refugees that they had not been forgotten about in western society.
In a previous interview with Jim, an IT teacher from St Ninian’s High School, the MGP travelling marshal called the van trip a ’resounding success’.
He said: ’Everyone was so grateful and the children were delighted to see us. They were all full of optimism and enthusiasm, which was great to see.’
The three men had felt inspired by the late TT racer Joey Dunlop, who had carried out his own humanitarian van trip to the Balkans.
The Syrian trip is the second charity expedition that Ronnie, Ian and Jim have organised.
Last year they delivered clothing, non-perishable food, toiletries and bedding to people in need in Romania.
