A finalist for the Miss Isle of Man charity competition is setting out to swim around the Tower of Refuge to raise money for her chosen charity - the MSPCA.

Tabby Wright, a 23-year-old primary school teacher from Crosby, will strike out across the water on May 27, but has not yet confirmed if she will use the doggy paddle.

’Each finalist is expected to support a charity,’ explained Tabby. ’I wanted to support the ManxSPCA because my grandmother, Marje Joughin, was their secretary for 35 years so it seemed appropriate to carry on her effort.’

’The ManxSPCA sometimes does not get the recognition it deserves and it also seems appropriate as the charity is celebrating its 120th anniversary this year.

’The idea is for each contestant to raise as much as they can before August 5 when the final takes place and each person’s total is announced.’

Though she enjoys swimming, she said she had never undertaken a similar challenge.’

’I’m eager but nervous at the same time,’ she said.

’I do more horse riding than swimming but I’m always up for a challenge. I did once do a kayaking expedition to Greenland.’

So far, the various pieces are falling into place. She has contacted the coastguard for their view and spoken to the open water swimming club community for advice on training.

’The coastguard told me as far as they were aware no-one had actually done it. I’m not sure of the exact distance but I’m wearing a watch that will monitor that, so I will know afterwards.

’I’ve met up with the open water swimming community and they have given me lots of advice about diet and weekly training and one of their committee members, Shirley Coop, is helping me. We have already planned a training programme for the next few weeks.’

The plan is to set off about 10.30am, leaving two hours before the tide is fully in and she will be supported by family friend Martyn Perkins MHK, who will be at the helm of the support boat.

Support is also provided by Mylchreests, and the Manx Mr Whippy van will be there to offer sustenance at the end of the swim - and to spectators too. She is also hoping for some musical accompaniment courtesy of Douglas Town Band, but this is yet to be confirmed.

She also has a page on Facebook: Tabby Wright for Miss Isle of Man and anyone who ’likes’ the page can get updates on her progress by following the link.

The public can make a donation or sponsor her at Ard Jerkyll in the main reception using a collection box and sponsorship sheets, which are being provided for anyone who prefers this to doing it online.
