Tributes have been paid to a former Onchan MHK, who has recently passed away at the age of 89.

George Waft served on the board of Onchan commissioners from 1971 to 1991, before becoming an Onchan MHK in 1991 until 1994 and later joining the Legislative Council.

A spokesperson from Onchan District Commissioners commented: ‘It is with great sadness that we have learned of Mr Waft’s passing.

‘Throughout his many years of service, he made a significant contribution to the local community and to public life in Onchan.

‘The commissioners and staff extend their sincere condolences to Mr Waft's family, friends, and all those who knew him at this difficult time.’

Current Onchan MHK Rob Callister also paid his respects on social media, saying that Mr Waft offered him plenty of advice when he first considered standing in the 2011 by-election for Onchan Commissioners.

‘George was generous with his time, and did the same again when I was considering standing for the House of Keys in 2016,’ Mr Callister said.

‘George always had a kind word to say, and I genuinely enjoyed our conversations over the years, particularly on Remembrance Sunday when we would often share a cup of tea and put the world to rights.

‘He served our community with dedication and commitment, and I know that many people across Onchan and the wider Isle of Man community will be saddened by his passing.’

Juan Watterson, current President of Tynwald, added: ‘Tynwald has lost one of its gentle souls. George built his career around the core values of care and compassion, the perfect qualities for a member of Tynwald.

‘It was an honour to work with George between 2006 and his retirement in 2010. His caring nature reached beyond our shores, and he was particularly proud of his chairmanship of the Overseas Aid Committee.

‘My thoughts and prayers go to Lynn, Jeanette and the family.’
