Tynwald members have failed to agree there is a climate emergency as the two branches were in disagreement over an amendment.

Daphne Caine MHK (Garff) had asked Tynwald to support her motion: ’That Tynwald believes that the Isle of Man faces an environmental and climate emergency; and is of the opinion that the government should allocate the necessary resources to take urgent and significant action.’

However, Mrs Caine’s motion didn’t get as far as a full vote because Environment, Food and Agriculture Minister Geoffrey Boot’s amendment to welcome Chief Minister Howard Quayle’s statement on a climate emergency and a planned bill on climate change, during the next legislative year, failed.

Mr Boot’s amendment received 13 votes for and five against in the Keys, but failed to find LegCo support where only one member backed it while five voted it down.

With the branches in disagreement, Mr Boot asked for a combined vote on his amendment at the next Tynwald sitting in June, thereby delaying the possibility of Mrs Caine’s motion being passed this month.

Tynwald therefore has officially not confirmed there is a climate emergency and will return to decide if there is or not next month.
