Visit Isle of Man is offering holidaymakers the chance to really get away from it all.

It is trialling an initiative called Phoneboxes which it is billing as the ultimate digital detox experience.

To help visitors relax and enjoy our island’s natural beauty, Phoneboxes will encourage them to lock their mobile phones away on arrival for the duration of their trip.

In return they will get a guide to the Isle of Man, a film camera, a packet of postcards and stamps, a map, bird and plant identification books, binoculars and magnifying glasses, a travel journal and a pack of playing cards.

Visit Isle of Man believes this will help guests switch off from the digital world, get back to nature and enjoy more time with their loved ones.

The boxes will be located initially at Knockaloe Beg Farm and Glen Helen Camping.

Research suggests 66% of British people believe they would reach a better work-life balance if they did not have their mobile phone on them at all times.

Angela Byrne, head of Visit Isle of Man, said: ’We want to encourage our visitors to disconnect, switch off and step away from digital distractions in order to disassociate from work and social media and concentrate better on surroundings.

’Installing Phoneboxes in glamping locations around the island will help people escape from everyday life and embrace the many activities that the island has to offer as well as spending time connecting with each other, without relying on technology for entertainment or communication.’

Research carried out by Visit Isle of Man showed that 52% of Brits regularly checking work emails while abroad and 54% continue to work through fear of getting behind.

Smartphones are also affecting the way people behave on holiday. Some 29% of Brits said digital distraction is the main reason why they are unable to switch off on holiday and 73% reported their mood being affected when their travelling companions spent too much time on their phones.
