People have been getting out an enjoying the fresh Manx air while raising funds for an education charity.

Junior Achievement Isle of Man is running its Big Summer Walk fundraiser in which it invites people to walk, jog or run 100km over the summer.

JA said it took a huge hit after a team of five people from the Isle of Man had their fundraising trip in the El Camino De Santiago Trek in northern Spain cancelled due to coronavirus pandemic.

The team were due to walk 100km over five days in October. It was expected that they would raise more that £20,000 for JA.

A Manx version is a replacement.

Taking part in the Big Summer Walk is Gail Yeowell, Clare Gelder and Mamta Paradise of Smart HR Solutions Limited.

The trio are each reaching the 100km target with their individual outings mixed in with some team walks. They have raised £500 towards their £750 target.

Gail, an executive director of JA, said: ’We’re about halfway through the challenge. We have provided support to JA in a variety of ways over the years.

’We realised that they missed out in terms of being able to do the trek and thought we’d join in the Big Summer Walk to help raise funds.

’We know what good the funds will do in supporting JA and the education services they provide children across the island.

’It’s about getting into a routine of doing a couple of walks able work in the week and a longer one at the weekend. It’s easy to do - I’m doing walking rather than running unlike the others.’

She believes the fundraiser will also encourage those who enjoyed getting out for one hour a day during lockdown to keep up their walking efforts.

The end date for the fundraising challenge, which also has prizes up for grabs, is September 7.
