Popular UK pub chain JD Wetherspoon has asked customers to keep the noise down when using mobile phones inside its venues.
Customers are also being advised to put their phones on silent or use earphones where necessary.
Wetherspoon told the BBC that staff would be asked to use ‘common sense’ when enforcing the new rules.
‘We are not looking to ask anyone to leave a pub if they go against the ruling, but it is an option for managers if they refuse to do so,’ a spokesperson for JD Wetherspoon said.
‘We're yet to hear of anyone who relishes having a pint against the backdrop of a speakerphone call or someone loudly playing a video, so we expect this move will be greatly welcomed.’
Wetherspoon chairman Tim Martin added: ‘In a world dominated by other people’s music and amplified sound, Wetherspoon pubs are an oasis of tranquillity and contemplation.
‘In order to avoid customers being driven chicken jalfrezi by a cacophony of sound, we are kindly asking phone users to pipe down.’
Back in April 2025, it was announced that the cut-price pub chain would take over the premises previously occupied by the 1886 Bar and Grill on Regent Street in Douglas.
Officially opened ahead of the TT races in 2025, the pub is now open daily from 8am, closing at midnight from Sunday to Thursday and staying open until 2am on Fridays and Saturdays.
Pub bosses said they pumped £1.8m into redeveloping the site following the takeover.
