There has been planning permission granted for a third unit at the empty plot on Peel Road in Douglas, where a KFC and Starbucks are already due to be built.
We took to Strand Street to ask people what sort of food outlet they would like to see there, and if there is any particular fast food, restaurants or other shops that people they think the island could do with.
Karen Elliot, 62, Peel, doesn’t think the site needs another food outlet, saying: ’If there was going to be something I wouldn’t have it as food.
’There seems to be too many of these places springing up around the place, and I don’t agree with those things being so close to the schools either - and they’re crossing the road in droves and eating not perhaps the right food.
’Perhaps if it went the other way and they had a health food shop in there, or a proper cafe that only did greens’.
Her husband, John, 74, added: ’Or even a discount supermarket.
’An Aldi or a Lidl, something like that.’
Overall, they both think that the island is good for food and shopping choices, with Karen saying: ’I think we’re very lucky, we’ve got everything.
Jim Parkington, 65, Peel, thinks the site should have a Wetherspoons pub, explaining: ’It’s great, everybody goes into Wetherspoons, you don’t have to be a certain age or a certain type, you just go.
’It’s good honest food, and it’s cheap.’
His wife Lesley, 65, does not think the site needs another corporate-owned chain business, saying: ’You see I prefer just the small independent shops.
’These big multiples [chain shops] don’t cut it for me.
’If we go on holiday, I like the towns that have got lots of independent shops that are different.
’Because all multiples, we’ve got them here already.
’There’s nothing different about that.’
Betty Laurincova, 31, Douglas, wants to see a Vietnamese restaurant on the site.
Asked about whether she thinks the island is missing anything, she said: ’I’m quite new to the island.
’I moved here in January this year.’
’I’m actually quite glad that I don’t have too many [shopping] options, I’m still comparing it - I usually lived in capital [cities] before, so it’s nice that I don’t have all those options because I shop much less and it’s actually a nice change’.
She added it also means she spends less money.
Paul Scott, 62, Castletown, would like to see more good Italian or French restaurants in the island, adding: ’And Turkish restaurants, you don’t see [them] across here at all’.
Asked if he missed any other UK chains, he said: ’Not really, I don’t go to McDonald’s, Burger King or KFC at all.
’Aldi and Lidl would be good price-wise, maybe bigger Co-ops - because I quite like the Co-op.
’[The one in Ramsey] is a long way to go’.
