Potholes - they are the bane of the life of every motorist and a problem that’s always worth looking into.
This particular example, on Derwent Drive in Onchan’s Lakeside Gardens estate, has been hailed as perhaps the daddy of them all.
It was described at the April Tynwald sitting as ’a Jules Verne pothole’. ’It is a journey into the centre of Earth,’ remarked Garff MHK Martyn Perkins.
The Derwent Drive mega-crater was the product of last winter’s heavy snow that made many roads in Onchan impassable. Some recent patch repairs may have lost it the title of the island’s biggest pothole, however.
And perhaps you know of one that’s larger, deeper and even more of a threat to your car’s suspension.

In a writtten reply to a Tynwald question, Infrastructure Minister Ray Harmer explained that it cost £45 to fix each pothole - that’s £2.25 on administration, £19.30 on labour, £13.25 on materials (bitumen and Ultracrete), £7 on the vehicle and £3.20 on consumables/small plant.
