A 50-year-old woman who kicked two police officers has been put on probation for 18 months.

Joanne Tiplady had to be restrained with Pava spray while being arrested.

She’s also been ordered to pay £500 compensation to each officer.

We previously reported that police were called to Tiplady’s address in Ballasalla, by a relative on July 2.

They reported that Tiplady had been swearing at her husband and had thrown two phones at him.

When officers arrived they found the defendant asleep in bed.

She was woken and officers told her to get dressed, but she tried to leave the bedroom, which prompted police to block her way.

Tiplady was told she was being arrested, but said: ‘F*** off.’

The officers tried to handcuff her but she kicked out, striking two of them during a struggle.

She continued to resist, swearing and saying: ‘F*** you. B*stards,’ and was eventually restrained using Pava spray.

In a basis of plea, Tiplady, now of Fairfield Terrace, Douglas, didn't accept she threw the phones, and while the prosecution didn't agree to that, they accepted it, saying it would not make a material difference to the sentence.

The court heard that she had no previous convictions, but did have a previous caution in 2024, relating to a common assault allegation.

Defence advocate Kaitlyn Shimmin said alcohol had played a significant role in the incident, and that Tiplady had been using it as a coping mechanism for stress.

Ms Shimmin said her client was making a lot of effort to address her alcohol use.

Deputy High Bailiff Rachael Braidwood told Tiplady: ‘It’s clear that you were very drunk. Your behaviour towards your own family was awful.’

The defendant must also pay £125 prosecution costs.
