A global festival of world music and culture is set to take place next month, despite not being able to welcome international artists.
The Our Island: Our World festival is to take place in Peel on Saturday, September 12, with a full day of events, activities and performances.
The highlight of the festival will be an evening concert by the local Latin and Americana band Lava, led by singer Christy DeHaven, who will perform at the Peel Centenary Centre.
There will also be the screening of a film about the legends of Latin-American music the Gypsy Kings, filmed at their home in the Carmargue.
There will also be a free family day taking place in the grounds of Peel Cathedral during the afternoon, featuring a wide range of live music and dance from local musicians and dance groups, a pop-up global food market, global story telling, mint tea, coffee, baklava and Turkish delight and a junk percussion workshop.
Now in its third year, the festival is held to highlight the many different communities and ethnic groups that call the Isle of Man their home and would normally feature two days of music.
Among the acts that have appeared in the past are African Kora player Jally Kebba Susso, the Rajasthan Heritgae Brass Band, the Soothsayers and world music figureheads Baka Beyond.
Organiser Dave McLean said that they were keen to hold the event this year after the lifting of social distancing.
’After a successful "Our Island: Our World" in 2019 with artists from all over the world , we had a four day festival planned for this year, until events overtook us,’ said Dave.
’We decided that there was so much talent from the various communities in the island that we could put on a festival with just artists, acts and volunteers from the Isle of Man.’
Tickets for this year’s evening concert are £10, available from Celtic Gold, in Peel, and online from www.etickets.im
