Residents braved the weather to visit Isle of Man Newspapers’ stand at the Royal Manx Show.

We challenged youngsters to race to get their stories on the front page of the newspaper.

The search for a story involved a game of hook-a-duck, with each duck having a word on the bottom.

Stories included ’Clumsy unicorn eats farmer’, ’Firefighter rescues 100-year-old hotdog’, ’Happy T-rex falls for TV’ and ’Farmer steals stunned nurse’.

The budding journalists then raced their way up the giant snakes and ladders board to get their story into print first.

They had to watch out for various pitfalls that could slow their progress, including lost shorthand notes, along the way.

Reporter Jess Ward and deputy editor Jacqueline Darbyshire were also on hand to show the children how much quicker it is possible to write using shorthand.

Jacqueline said: ’Thank you to everyone who came to our stand to play the journalism-themed games.

’Through play, we were able to give youngsters an insight into what happens in the newsroom.

’Of course, sadly, we we don’t actually play hook-a-duck as a way of generating story ideas.’
