Not wanting to let months of preparation and practising go to waste, more than 100 talented local singers, dancers, poets and musicians took part in the Manx Music Festival.

Re-christened ’The Guild Goes On’, the music festival, which is better known as the ’Guild’, received online video entries from many performers who had planned to enter the festival.

The Guild Goes On opened for entries on Sunday, April 26, and remained open for the next week, closely mirroring the period the festival was due to take place.

Although this year’s Guild was a non-competitive event, all entries still came under the careful eye of three different professional adjudicators, Steven Roberts, who adjudicated the music entries, David Fonville the drama categories and Deborah Norris, who cast her eye over the dance entries.

Eight-year-old Lowrenna Joughin, a dance pupil from Gena’s Dance Academy, performed a version of the dance ’Once Upon a Dream’ taken from the film ’Sleeping Beauty’.

Isaac Kreisky, 10, performed a version of a Canadian folk song, ’The Jones Boys’, that was praised by the adjudicator for giving a confident performance full of character.

Zara Benham, aged 11, sang a song entitled ’Feed the Birds’, taken from the film ’Mary Poppins’.

Zara’s mum, Lisa, said: ’She was thrilled to still be able to enter as she has worked hard. We are lucky to have had the chance to still showcase our work.

’She was so pleased with the adjudicator’s remarks as they were really positive.’

Alice Gregory, 10, entered with the song ’Naughty’, from the musical Matilda.

Alice said: ’I wanted to enter the Guild Goes On because I love singing and I’d spent so long rehearsing the song with (music teacher) Mandy Griffin.

’I was disappointed the Guild had to be cancelled so I was really happy when they said we could send in a video.’

Eleven-year-old Bethany Williams took part by singing a version of the song ’Quiet’, also from ’Matilda.

Bethany’s mum, Stacey, said: ’I asked her why she wanted to take part in this year’s Guild and she has said she loves singing and taking part.

’She also said she was really happy to hear that she could still take part in the Guild during lockdown because it gave her something fun to do.’

Zac Colligon sang a song from the musical ’School of Rock’, dressed in his Ballakermeen High School uniform.

The talented young performer was due to take part in the Taylorian Productions’ version of the show at the Gaiety Theatre later this year.

Aalish Kilgallon, nine, sang ’Home’, from the musical ’Wonderland’ and was rewarded with the adjudicator’s comments:

’You have a lovely tone and sing with ease. This isn’t an easy song and you manage tricky intervals with lots of confidence.’

All contestants who entered were given a unique ’The Guild Goes On’ certificate.
