Amelia Sharpe won the HSBC UK Junior National Road Race Championship title in Lincolnshire at the weekend.

The Liv Halo cyclist pipped Backstedt Elynor Backstedt to the line in Witham-On-The-Hill, with Anna Docherty claiming the final step on the podium.

The three escaped the peloton on the third of four laps contested in sweltering conditions that saw temperatures rise to more than 30 degrees.

Prior to the race it was expected to be difficult for any break to succeed, but the first meaningful attack saw Docherty and Sharpe in a move with Backstedt, a precursor of what was to come later in the race.

They were briefly bought back by the peloton before another break threatened to get clear, but the trio made a significant break early on lap three which quickly grew to 50 seconds.

Ultimately the championship was fought out between the same three riders, with Sharpe prevailing on the line to take the honours while fellow Manxie Ellen Barker was a fine seventh.

Speaking afterwards, Amelia commented: ’I never thought the break would stay away. It was so hard racing in those conditions, so hot that you could see lot of riders were struggling so pushing the pace early on really suited us as a team.’

Equiom Isle of Man’s Thomas Bostock led the local charge in the equalivalent men’s race in ninth place. Find out how the rest of the team got on in Thursday’s Manx Independent.
