A tense weekend is in store for Jamie Brown’s Ramsey Crookall Bacchanalians A as they again greet a team from the UK in the quarter-finals of the England Hockey Trophy on Sunday.
After dispatching the first team of Harrogate followed by Rugby and East Warwickshire in the last 16, confidence is sky high for the Tromode side as they delve into uncharted territory in the competition.
Richard Hayward’s Didsbury team will provide another stern test, a team plying their trade in the North Hockey Men’s League Division One.
The Manchester-based side sit atop the division 15 points clear of Bacchas’ previous opponents Harrogate. Having been knocked out of the England Hockey Cup, the northerners have an ominous record of 20 wins and two draws in their last 22 games.
A tough proposition then, but nothing seems to phase Jamie Brown’s all-conquering Bacchas first team, who were last defeated in the league back in March 2013.
Having won all 10 of their league games in the previous two seasons, and on for another perfect season this year, it looks to be a real clash of the titans.
The Whites will appreciate all possible support from the hockey community at 11.30am on Sunday morning at the NSC to capitalise on their home advantage.
Also on Sunday, Bacchanalians Women’s Over-35s Masters team have a semi-final of their own, against Wisbech Town Ladies’ vets.
Niamh Goddard’s Masters have shown themselves to be the real entertainers in the o35s competition this season, having coming out on top of the previous rounds by edging five-goal and nine-goal thrillers. Expect a goal-filled game on Sunday afternoon at the NSC.
With the half-term break still upon us; there are only a handful of games in the local Bridgewater’s Cups and Plates.
Game of the day has to be the cup semi-final match-up between Luis Novo-Smith’s Crowe Morgan Valkyrs A and LJ Ramsey A.
The westerners have found their feet recently and looked a real threat against Bacchas A midweek, despite being defeated by two goals to nil.
Jonathan Gower-Jackson’s Ramsey are also a team seemingly on the up and were only narrowly defeated 3-2 by the Blues earlier in the season. This is a game where the Greens always seem to raise their game, so it could be a tight affair.
Another cracking game is in store between two great rivals as Imogen Manning’s Valkyrs A and Emma Leeming’s Bacchas A go head-to-head in the Women’s Cup.
With both sides containing a host of island players, there are some great friendships between the sides but expect no quarter to be given as soon as they step across the white line.
Each team will see this as a real opportunity to book their places in the cup final against Canaccord Genuity Vikings A.
Having been defeated in the semi-final to Vikings earlier in the month, Lauren Brew’s LJ Ramsey A have a PwC Premier League game against Harlequins A in which they will be confident of success.
Finally to the Bridgewaters Men’s Plate semi-final which sees James Aitchison’s Ramsey B face off against Partitionware Castletown B.
Aichison’s green mean machine have found some form of late, and should have too much for the concerted Reds who lie a division below them in the standings.
