While most at Bacchas will be congratulating Andy ’Phoenix’ Kneale and Helen Thomas at their wedding, attentions in hockey turn league trophies which could fall this weekend.
Harlequins are likely to fall victim to the relegation sword in the PwC Women’s Premier League this week assuming that they continue their run of losses to Ramsey.
The latter side had a few shaky results of late and, while Harlequins might get a result on a good day, their goal difference will almost certainly see them relegated in the forthcoming weeks.
Valkyrs A, still reeling from a sharp defeat to league leaders Vikings, will look to overturn that form against an improving Castletown team.
Nothing can be confirmed in the Men’s Premier Division this week, although Vikings A versus Valkyrs A will be an interesting and close game.
Both clubs are sharing goals around liberally while Vikings, with the best defensive record in the league, have a narrow edge entering into the fixture. A repeat fixture follows on Good Friday.
Also interesting is Vikings B versus Ramsey. The former are currently four goals behind Bacchas B on equal points but with a game in hand.
A shock win would pile the pressure on Bacchas B, but even a loss, if narrow, would leave the relegation battle to the last week of the season, although Bacchas B have the easier fixture there.
Castletown will seal their return to the Men’s Premier Division if they beat Saracens on Saturday.
Dave Clark-Wilson’s squad having averaged more than six goals a game during the season.
Saracens have been their closest competition throughout but, with a guarantee of second, have little left to play for other than a top goalscorer trophy for George Powell.
A win for Valkyrs B over Bacchas Colts will consign the latter to relegation, both teams having struggled against a notably stronger top four.
Bacchas Colts have struggled at both ends of the pitch, which is likely to give Valkyrs the edge.
In Women’s Division One, Vikings B and Valkyrs B is likely to be close, although the addition of current league top goalscorer Steph Cottier part way through the season has given Valkyrs B a little extra firepower and possibly the edge in this match.
Assuming Valkyrs win, Bacchas Colts - currently two points ahead - will need two points from Saracens to give themselves a distinct advantage in a fascinating first versus second clash in the final week of the season.
A loss for Valkyrs could result in Bacchas taking the title this week.
Finally, Saracens will almost clinch the Under-16s title this Saturday if they beat Valkyrs.
Harlequins play Vikings this weekend, therefore if Saracens lose they’ll be right back in the race for the trophy, but they’d still have a mathematical chance of winning with two strong results.
