It is a return to a full list of Manx league cricket this weekend, after only one game took place last Saturday and Sunday.
Let’s hope that the weather returns to a semblance of summer so that we can get the matches in without further disturbance.
Valkyres sit at the top of the tree in the Manx Premier League and this week Shimmin Wilson Peel and St John’s (PSJ) play them at Mullen-e-Cloie, beginning at midday on Saturday. Valkyres were awarded the previous match between these two clubs by way of a Duckworth-Lewis result and will be hoping to field a full-strength team this weekend. They will enter the match with some confidence, but they will need to avoid the kind of batting collapse that took place against the Development XI.
PSJ’s skipper Ollie Webster is convinced that he will have no players available, but he manages to conjure up players from somewhere and they keep winning. It could be a decent game this time around.
Sunday in the Premier League sees Ramsey Crookall Finch Hill take on the Callin Wild Development XI at Ballafletcher from 1pm. Both teams should be able to field stronger sides than last week as a lot of players have returned from playing in the UK.
George Burrows is in tremendous form but the Development’s bowlers such as Ed Walker and Jacob Butler are also performing well - Butler’s three wickets certainly wrecked Valkyres’ day two weeks ago.
The young Development batsmen may have to concentrate against the bowling attack of the Burrows and Clarke boys.
There is a return to action in the Division One of the Weekend League when Baker Tilly Cronkbourne visit Hannan Law Crosby at the Memorial Playing Fields from 11am on Saturday.
Cronkbourne have been enduring a torrid time since the split of the leagues and they have lost all three matches so far - I’m sure that they will be keen to get off the mark with a win.
Crosby won the last league meeting between the two clubs when, despite an impressive 87 from Adam McAuley, Crosby were able to knock off the required 166 for the loss of only two wickets, which suggests that the bowlers were under-powered that day.
Crosby look to be coming into a bit of form with the bat and they will be able to call upon the services of their young Development players, but Cronkbourne won a shortened Tinker Cup game against them so Crosby may not have it all their own way.
Newfield Castletown make the long trek northwards on Saturday to play CTH Insurance Ramsey at midday when the hosts will provide a customary sunny welcome to the team from down south.
Castletown top Division One with three wins from their three matches so far. Sam Callister and Jaco Jansen can be a formidable opening pair of batsmen if they are allowed to dictate the game and Castletown can bat down the order. The southerners will have confidence in their ability so Ramsey may have a hard time.
But the home team managed a win against Cronkbourne and they can cause an upset. The Ramsey team are a good bunch of blokes to play cricket against and they love their cricket. They love to moan about everything too, but at least then they are very happy! Mind you, I think this description covers a lot of cricketers in the island who enjoy their cricket.
