Isle of Man Commonwealth Games cyclists Ben Swift and Matthew Bostock both completed this year’s Lloyds Tour of Britain, with the race providing an emotional farewell for Swift as he made his final appearance in the event.

The five-stage race, which ran from Lincoln to Earlston in the Scottish Borders, was won overall by Belgium’s Tim Wellens of UAE Team Emirates-XRG, with Britain’s Lewis Askey second and Jasper Stuyven third.

The Onchan resident finished 38th overall in the ToB, finishing 16 minutes and 44 seconds behind Wellens after another solid showing in the British stage race as he played a supporting role to his team-mates

The 38-year-old - who helped Bostock win a memorable gold medal at last month's Commonwealth Games in Glasgow - began the event with 74th place on the opening stage around Lincoln before finishing 72nd on stage two.

He placed 94th on stage three from Hull to Beverley, a day dominated by the sprinters and won by Dutchman Olav Kooij.

Swift then produced his best finish of the race on the demanding fourth stage from Helmsley to Leyburn, crossing the line in 35th place before completing the final stage in 62nd position.

His efforts also helped him finish eighth in the mountains classification.

Swift was given a guard of honour by fellow riders ahead of the final stage in recognition of his long association with the Tour of Britain, marking his final appearance in the race having made his debut at the event in 2009.

Since then, Swift has been a regular presence in the Tour of Britain over the years and boasts the fourth most number of top-10 finishes in the event with 21 – the outright record of 31 is held by Laxey’s Sir Mark Cavendish.

Before hanging up his cycling cleats in November, Swift is expected to ride in several more races in Italy before bringing the curtain down on his professional career at the Paris-Tours Elite in France.

Bostock, meanwhile, completed the Tour of Britain race in 78th overall while representing GB.

The Manx rider entered the ToB on the back of an outstanding summer which had already seen him crowned British national criterium champion before adding Commonwealth Games gold to his list of achievements.

Speaking before the race got underway, Bocky admitted that he would be playing a supporting role for his GB team-mates Ollie Wood, Ben Wiggins, Elliot Rowe, Will Smith and Jacob Bush.

And so it proved, although on stage two he had the misfortune of suffering a mechanical when in the leading bunch late in the day and lost contact. The group went on to contest the sprint for the win.

Bostock finished 80th on the opening stage and 92nd on stage two, before again placing 92nd on stage three, finishing one minute and 57 seconds behind stage winner Kooij.

He continued through the final two stages to complete the demanding five-day event and finish 33 minutes and six seconds behind overall winner Wellens.
