The McCanney brothers rounded off the 2017 Enduro World Championship in style at Zschopau in Germany over the weekend.

It was particularly satisfying for Daniel who recorded his first E2 class victory of the season on Saturday and followed that up with second place on Sunday.

Younger brother Jamie was slightly disappointed, despite taking the honours on Sunday and finishing third on day one, as it still left him six points adrift of newly-crowned world champion Josep Garcia in the final standings.

Completing his second full year for the Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing team, Daniel claimed the E2 class victory on the first day of competition in what were challenging conditions in the Saxony district of the country.

With little to separate the leading three E2 class riders throughout the day, it was in fact Jamie who topped the opening test.

Daniel was quickest on the day’s second test and again topped the results sheet on test four to win overall by more than 10 seconds from Garcia.

’Obviously, I wanted to be doing this [winning] earlier in the year but to finally get a win feels great,’ said Daniel.

’I felt really confident throughout the day and I was able to push hard during the enduro test, which I really liked.

’I didn’t make any mistakes, made a strong start to the day, and managed to get the win. It was a very close battle with myself, Josep and Jamie.’

For much of the day his younger sibling held second place on the Outsiders Yamaha Official Enduro Team’s WR250, but a mistake on the final extreme test cost him dearly. Finishing 17th in class on the test in question, he fell behind championship rival Garcia in the day’s eventual result, as the Spaniard took the runner-up position.

Overall it was an amazing day for the Brits, with Beta’s Steve Holcombe crowned EnduroGP World Champion and Brad Freeman topping the junior podium.

Jamie McCanney rode faultlessly on Sunday to make it a family double for the weekend, with Daniel runner-up.

’This has been my best GP of the season and I’m really happy about it,’ said Daniel. ’I’ve left it a bit late maybe, but I made some changes coming into the weekend. I always knew the speed was there but I felt like something was missing during the season.

’Now I’ve found it, this is where I need to be. I liked the tests in Germany and I was well-prepared for the GP. I got faster and faster as the weekend went on and that was very positive.

’I’m really happy I got the win on Saturday. I had two crashes early on Sunday morning so I knew it would be a struggle to catch back up with the leading riders. I had another crash in the extreme test but kept pushing hard to end the day with second in E2.’

Josep Garcia (KTM) topped the final championship standings in Enduro 2 with 350 points, followed by Jamie McCanney (Yamaha) on 344; Eero Remes (TM) 309; Pascal Rauchenecker (Husqvarna) 274; and Daniel McCanney (Husqvarna) 254.
