With basketball currently on hold like so many other sports in the island at the moment, this has given correspondent Martin Dunne the chance to take an in-depth look at some of the leading women’s players in the Senior League.

Name: Nefeli Protogeraki

Age: 27

Height: 170cm

How did you get into basketball?: It is a very popular sport back in Greece so when I decided to play a sport competitively here I joined a basketball team.

Favourite player?: Sue Bird who played for Seattle Sonics and is one of the greatest basketball players of all time - four WNBA titles and four Olympic gold medals.

Highlight of the season?: I enjoyed so much the game that we won, not so much for the win per se but because it seems like everything worked as it was supposed to.

Everyone was in the right spot at the right time and the entire team worked like a well-winded clock.

Predictions for the rest of the season?: I just hope we will get to play more games this season

Name: Lauren Ellison

Age: 29

Height: 5ft 9"

How did you get into basketball?: My mum, Marie, had played since high school.

After spending enough time with her at training sessions and games, she and her friend Annie decided to set up a team for my friends and I when we were around Year 8 - there were no junior leagues so we joined the women’s league.

Favourite player/biggest inspiration?: Becky Dunne

Highlight of the season?: Personally, having suffered an ankle injury and then being ready to play again as Covid all took off, missing the majority of the previous season took its toll.

It was just great to be back this season and playing with the team.

As a team - winning our first game in the men’s league!

Predictions for the play-offs?: Underdogs Hoops take it for the win!

Age: 21

Height: 6ft

How did you get into basketball?: Family played/Saturday mornings with the Manx Youth Games.

Favourite player/biggest Inspiration?: My dad, he played in the UK and coached the island teams.

Highlight of the season?: Getting our first win in the men’s league against PokerStars!
