Most clubs might already be one-quarter of the way through the football season, but there are still debuts aplenty in the latest Team of the Week.
With the Canada Life Premier League standings beginning to take shape, no fewer than eight players make their seasonal bows in Isle of Man Newspapers’ hypothetical XI.
Donning the goalkeeper gloves this week is DHSOB’s 17-year-old talent Nathan Quayle who produced a string of fine saves to help the Blackberry Lane side claim their second win of the campaign, keeping a clean sheet in a 1-0 victory over Peel. Quayle narrowly edged out Harry Horbury and Matthew Quirk for the coveted number one jersey on what was a strong day for top flight goalkeepers.
Slotting into a three-man defence ahead of Quayle is Steven Corlett, Cameron Kay and another who impressed at Blackberry Lane, his Old Boys team-mate James Bucuris.
Corlett shone for Corinthians as the Whites edged past Marown 2-1 in Crosby despite having six players on FC Isle of Man duty in Guernsey.
Bucuris joined Quayle in thwarting a young Peel side, performing well in defence to help his side keep a clean sheet in their aforementioned hard-fought win over the westerners, while Kay was in fine form at the back for St George’s during their 4-0 win at home to Douglas Royal.
Stealing the show in that fixture at Glencrutchery Road with a man-of-the-match performance was Joey Morling who scored as well as assisted two goals during Geordies’ win over Royal which moved the Saints up to third in the table.
Joining Morling in a four-man midfield are Danny Gerrard, Stephen Riding and Johnny Shields of Corinthians, Rushen United and Ayre United respectively.
Gerrard continued his fine start to the season with an excellent showing during the Whites’ aforementioned win at Marown and duly captains the latest Team of the Week selection.
Riding was one of the standout performers during Rushen’s 3-3 draw with defending champions St Mary’s at Croit Lowey, pulling the strings in the heart of midfield and playing the quarterback role for his team-mates.
Shields racked up his third TotW appearance of the season already after starring for Ayre during the Tangerines’ 3-2 victory away at St John’s, playing a key role to help the northerners move up to seventh in the table.
Another to impress in that game at Mullen-e-Cloie was Danny Oram who bagged two of the goals for the visitors, therefore earning his first TotW call-up of the 2020-21 season in a three-man attack.
Joining Oram up front is Douglas Athletic’s Martin Cowan and the evergreen Steven Priestnal of St Mary’s.
Cowan was at the double for the Pinks as Craig Purvis’ men claimed their third win of the season with a 3-2 success away at Ramsey, a result which moved DAFC up to sixth in the table.
Also bagging a brace was Priestnal who rolled back the years with a superb double as the Saints twice came from behind to claim a point at leaders Rushen, including a sublime late free-kick which snatched a 3-3 draw in Port Erin.
