The Isle of Man men’s team maintained their 100 per cent record in the NatWest Island Games on Monday, with a 5-2 victory over the Falkland Islands at Save, Gotland.
The Manx got off to the perfect start with only four minutes on the clock.
Following a cross from Liam Cowin on the right, Calum Morrissey drove a bullet header into the net.
Three minutes later, the Manx doubled their lead. Stephen Riding’s corner was met by Morrissey who glanced home his second header of the game.
Frank Jones came close to getting his name on the scoresheet when his pile-driver hit the crossbar, however, the IoM netted a third in the 18th minute.
Riding was scythed down in the penalty area and from the resulting spot-kick, Morrissey coolly sunk his effort inside the left post to complete his hat-trick.
Debutant Sean Doyle also came close, directing a header narrowly wide, however, the Corinthians’ striker did grab his maiden goal with 40 minutes on the clock.
Riding’s corner was met by Doyle at the near post and he nodded the ball into the net.
Just before half-time, the Falklands did pull a goal back in controversial circumstances.
Following a collision involving Morrissey and the Falklands’ goalkeeper that saw both left lying on the pitch injured, the South Atlantic side countered and Sam Toolan drove home an angled shot.
Two minutes after the restart, the Manx netted a fifth occasion when they were awarded another penalty. Morrissey again was on target this time with a ’Panenka’ spot-kick.
Falklands net a second through Toolan just after the hour mark.
The Manx finished the game the stronger and player-manager Nick Hurt, Matthew Woods and Ciaran McNulty all came close to adding to the island’s tally.
A draw minimum against Ynys Mon (Tuesday 4pm BST) in their final group match will be enough to see the Manx progress to the semi-finals.
IOM v Falklands: Damyan Petkov, Chris Cannell, Jack McVey, Karl Clark (Alex Harrison), Liam Cowin, Nick Hurt, Frank Jones (Captain), Alex Holden (Matthew Woods 55m), Calum Morrissey (Ciaran McNulty 65m), Sean Doyle, Stephen Riding.
