Two of the sides heavily tipped to battle it out for this season’s Canada Life Premier League title meet in Peel on Saturday afternoon.
The westerners welcome Corinthians to Douglas Road with both aiming to maintain their 100 per cent start to the campaign.
Steve Falconer’s hosts opened their 2018-19 account with a 4-1 win over Douglas Royal.
Stalwart Kerron Christian stole the headlines that day with a hat-trick against a Royal side expected to struggle in the league’s lower reaches this term.
Midfield maestro Marc Kelly was suspended for that match and reigning FA Player of the Year Lee Gale was sidelined by injury.
Falconer will be hoping to have both back to take on the Whites who currently sit atop of the fledgling standings after an impressive 6-1 win at St John’s.
Danny McMahon’s charges seem to have picked up from where they left off last season, the attacking trio of Sean Doyle and Dan Simpson supplemented by the returning Ridings brothers.
Ryan Burns has also impressed in the Whites backline in the absence of one of last season’s star turns, Cameron Lee, meaning they might just go into this encounter as marginal favourites.
Peel, however, is never an easy place to get a result and this one should live up to its billing as the fixture card’s stand-out game.
After a pre-season of flux at St George’s, the Glencrutchery Road side showed they they are still a force to be reckoned with on the opening day as they held St Mary’s to a 1-1 at the Bowl.
Another potentially tricky away day looks in store this weekend as Geordies travel to near-neighbours DHSOB.
A wedding meant that the latter were shy of a few key players as they lost to Douglas Athletic by the odd goal in five on the opening day.
New first-team manager Liam Buckley will be hoping he has a more bountiful squad to choose from this time as he takes on Chris Bass Sr’s reigning champions.
St Mary’s will be hoping player-manager Alex Harrison’s revolution gathers further momentum this weekend when they host John Palmer’s Laxey at the Bowl.
The Miners are yet to play a match this campaign and it will be interesting to see how many of the club’s talented teenagers are available for this one. Expect a home win.
St John’s United host Marown at Mullen-e-Cloie.
You would expect United to take all the points in the traditional Mushroom Cup fixture, but Dave Brew’s Crosby side will be eager to kick-off their top-flight return with a win.
Johnners’ striker Paul Whitehead was sent off in the opening-day defeat by Corinthians and should be suspended for the encounter.
With last year’s top scorer Rhys Oates departing for Peel in the summer transfer window, the Johnners might struggle to get goals and Marown could sneak a point.
The top-flight’s other fixture on Saturday also looks a close one on paper.
Douglas Athletic host Douglas Royal at Springfield Road.
Athletic claimed a fine win over Old Boys on the opening day and manager Craig Purvis will be hoping the Pinks can stretch their 100 per cent record.
Royal know a long hard season lies ahead as they aim to avoid the division’s ejector seat and that every point garnered will be precious.
Given that fact, expect Michael Fitzmaurice’s side to give it a go against a team that you’d expect to be not too far ahead of them in the league.
