The 13th installment of this season’s Isle of Man Newspapers’ Team of the Week certainly hasn’t proved unlucky for some, with a handful of players making their debuts.
Sam Holliday marked his return to DHSOB with a starring role for the Blackberry Lane side as they frustrated title hopefuls Rushen United at Croit Lowey.
The Old Boys goalkeeper played a key role in restricting the Spaniards to three goals as he pulled off several fine saves in Port Erin, therefore he takes his place in between the sticks in TotW for the first time this season.
Also impressing in the south of the island in that match was FC Isle of Man player Adam Cooil who shone in defence for the home side, helping his team keep a clean sheet and therefore earning his third call-up of the campaign so far.
Joining him in a three-man defence in the hypothetical XI are Darren Smethurst and Cameron Avery of St Mary’s and Marown respectively. Smethurst was one of the Saints’ standout performers as the reigning Premier League champions overcame the spirited challenge of in-form Ayre United in Andreas, helping the Bowl outfit triumph 4-3.
Likewise, Avery was the man of the match for Marown as Dave Brew’s men maintained their recent upturn in form with a fine 4-1 victory over Douglas Athletic in Crosby which boosted their hopes of survival.
Such was Avery’s performance in that match - in which he helped himself to a goal - that he was named as the player of the day in the latest Team of the Week.
Another to excel at the Memorial Playing Fields was his Marown team-mate Adam Mealin who set up the opening goal before going on to find the back of the net himself. Therefore, he lines up in a four-man midfield alongside Ayre United’s Shaun Kelly, Rushen’s Mike Williams and Ramsey’s Chris Duggan.
Kelly continued his fine run of form with a well-taken hat-trick for the Tangerines as the northerners very nearly surprised champions St Mary’s, while Williams produced an all-round good performance for Rushen during their aforementioned victory over Old Boys at Croit Lowey to maintain the Spaniards’ title challenge.
Duggan was the star of the show for Ramsey as the Ballacloan outfit moved into the top half of the table thanks to a 4-1 success at St John’s, with Duggan opening the scoring for the northerners before setting up Dylan Pickles’ second.
The three-man Team of the Week attack boasts a healthy six-goal haul between them, with Sean Doyle leading the way after netting a hat-trick for Corinthians during the Whites’ resounding 7-0 victory over near-neighbours Douglas Royal.
Also impressing for the hosts in the Ballafletcher derby was his team-mate Luke Murray who grabbed a brace to continue his fine form, while completing the line-up is Peel youngster Charlie Higgins whose goal helped Rob Cottier get off to a winning start as manager with a 3-1 success at Laxey.
