The 51st running of the Macau Motorcycle Grand Prix was red flagged at half-distance early on Saturday morning following a fatal accident involving TT regular Dan Hegarty.

The crash occurred at Fishermen’s Bend and it is thought that the popular Englishman died instantly in the incident.

The race result was declared on the positions at the last complete lap when 27-year-old Glenn Irwin of Carrickfergus was leading by 1.3 seconds from Peter Hickman. It made the County Antrim man the first Northern Ireland rider to win the race since Phillip McCallen in 1996.

When the race ended, Michael Rutter was in third place, with Martin Jessopp fourth and Manxman Conor Cummins fifth on the Padgett’s Motorcycles Honda.

Dan Kneen from Braddan was 11th on the second Metzeler PBM/Penz13 Ducati Panigale.
