It was another good night for the Isle of Man’s athletes at the windswept Lathbury Sports Complex on Tuesday evening.
Team Isle of Man ended the session with two golds and two silvers to move second in the athletics medal table.
Northern AC’s Ashleigh Lachenicht won gold in the women’s 400m knocking nearly half a second off her personal best as she crossed the line in 56.02s to win by a margin of 1.41s from Guernsey’s Eleanor Gallagher.
Lachenicht’s victory means its now three times in a row the Isle of Man has won this event following Catherine Reid’s triumphs at the 2015 and 2017 Games.
Rachael Franklin completed the first leg of a possible 800/1,500 double by taking a classy win in the latter.
With 500 metres to go, Franklin put the hammer down and powered clear of her only challenger Rebekka Fuglø of the Faroe Islands to take victory in a time of 4 min 31.06 sec, six seconds clear of her rival.
Franklin’s team-mate Phoebe Coates finished sixth and will also compete in the 800 metres, the final of which takes place on Friday.
David Mullarkey edged a remarkable photo finish for second in the men’s 800m final. The 19 year old couldn’t be separated from Cayman’s Michael Smikle by the naked eye as both crossed the line in 1:55.71. After a consultation of the finish camera, however, the former Castle Rushen student was awarded the silver medal by one thousandth of a second.
Mullarkey’s fellow Manxie Rhys Owen finished seventh as Shetland’s Seumas Mackay retained the title he won two years ago in Gotland.
Grabbing the Isle of Man’s other medal of the night was women’s team captain Hannah Riley.
Competing in her ninth Games, Riley finished second in the 100m hurdles to secure her fifth silver and 12th IG medal overall.
In the women’s shot put, Island Games debutants Tamzin Fayle and Megan Lockwood finished 11th and 14th with throws of 8.05m and 7.76m respectively. Gold was won by reigning champion and current Games record holder Linda Kivistik, the Saaremaa athlete throwing 13.84m.
