The Isle of Man archery team has been announced for the 2027 edition of the Island Games.
Next year’s biennial event takes place in the Danish archipelago of the Faroe Islands between July 3-9.
The team is made up of seasoned archers with previous games experience and proven performance, along with archers who will be attending their first Games but have been competing on behalf of the island during the last 12 months at a number of UK competitions to allow qualification and wider team experience.
The recurve team features Johnathan Gordon, Richard Hainge, Erin Hainge (junior) and Emily O’Hara, while the compound team comprises Rhys Moore, Ethan Moore, Andrew Westmoreland, Aalin George and Caitlin Gelder.
David Moore will be the team manager, with Marie Hainge as the assistant manager/chaperone.
Club news
Seven archers turned up at Isle of Man Archery Club on Sunday to shoot the first Vegas round of the season.
Arguably the hardest of the indoor rounds, the target is a three-spot face arranged in a triangle that has to be shot in a specific order – lower left, top centre, lower right. The constant adjustment of body and shoulder position is taxing to say the least.
The largest field of the day, and only direct competition in the Vegas, came in the gents recurve where Mat Smith, David Craine, Richard Hainge and Johnathan Gordon took to line in a bid for glory.
All of the men had misses but once again Gordon showed his superiority by recording yet another win, finishing 38 points ahead of his nearest rival.
Hainge sent two arrows wide of the mark but still managed to break the 500 barrier to take second. Smith took the last place on the podium, while Craine haemorrhaged misses and had to settle for fourth.
Erin Hainge had the women’s recurve division all to herself. A couple of misses put a bit of dent in her score, but she still broke the 500 barrier, which was some consolation.
In the women’s compound Marie Hainge had the double honour of being the only archer in action to keep all of her arrows on target and recording the highest score of the day.
Chris Crompton bravely took on the challenge with his trusty barebow and had a number of misses but kudos to him for attempting it in the first place.
Stan Gorry and Peter Howland did not rise to the challenge and elected instead to stick to a full-face Portsmouth round, with Gorry recording an easy victory over Howland with the longbow.
Results: Vegas, gents recurve 1, J. Gordon 59/549/25; 2, R. Hainge 58/511/12; 3, M. Smith 56/463/11; 4, D. Craine 44/336/2. Women’s recurve - E. Hainge 58/508/12. Women’s compound - Marie Hainge 60/550/16. Barebow - C.Crompton 51/411/16. Portsmouth, gents longbow 1, S. Gorry 59/375/4; 2, P. Howland 43/201/0.
