The Isle of Man have finished top of the medal table at this year’s NatWest Island Games in Gotland, Sweden.
The Manx team of more than 230 competitors went into Friday’s final day of action second in the table, two gold medals behind the Faroe Islands.
However, a blitz on the last day of the biennial competition saw Team IoM romp home well clear of the Faroese and surpass the 100-medal mark at this year’s Games.
Away from the football (see separate report) once again the island’s gymnasts played their part, with Tara Donnelly in particular claiming a sublime seventh gold of the week.
Jessica Li claimed a quickfire double gold at Rackethallen as she first came from behind to beat Greenland’s Sara Lindskov Jacobsen in the badminton women’s singles final, before teaming up with Kim Clague to clinch gold in the women’s doubles.
At the same venue, Laura Feely and Karen Faragher joined forces to claim the glory in the tennis women’s doubles.
There was then a flurry of medals at the athletics track where the Isle of Man won gold in the women’s 4x100m relay and the women’s 4x400m relay before the men’s and women’s half-marathon runners both clinched team gold.
In the south of Gotland at Visby Golf Klubb, the Manx golfers were in irrepressible form as they romped to both men’s individual and team gold, Alex McAuley topping the final leaderboard ahead of team-mate Tom Harrison in silver and Darryl Callister agonisingly missing out on bronze by virtue of countback.
