Jonathan Rea has been shortlisted for the 2017 BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.

The Castletown resident enjoyed another stellar season for Kawasaki in the World Superbike Championship, has been recognised after becoming the first rider to complete a hat-trick of successive WSBK titles as well as breaking the record for the number of points scored in a single season.

Having also been awarded an MBE by the Queen, the Ulsterman is now only five race wins behind the all-time record held by by four-time champion Carl Fogarty.

Also shortlisted were Elise Christie (short track speed skating), Mo Farah (athletics), Chris Froome (cycling), Lewis Hamilton (F1), Anthony Joshua (boxing), Harry Kane (football), Johanna Konta (tennis), Jonnie Peacock (Para-athletics), Adam Peaty (swimming), Anya Shrubsole (cricket) and Bianca Walkden (taekwondo).

The shortlist was compiled by a 12-member panel including representatives from BBC Sport, BBC Radio 5 live, former Olympians and Paralympians, ex-professional sportsmen and women as well as various newspaper journalists.

This year’s BBC SPOTY ceremony will be held at the Liverpool Echo Arena on Sunday, December 17.
