The second weekend of the Utmost Wealth Isle of Man Swimming Championships took place at the NSC over Saturday and Sunday

Letisha Ellis continued her fine form from the previous weekend and, along with a hatful of personal best times, the 13-year-old Douglas para-swimmer took no fewer that five British Deaf records.

These were all three breaststroke events - the 50m,100m and 200m - along with the 50m freestyle record and the 100m individual medley, taking her tally to 10 British records broken since her first in June.

The record form continued for Commonwealth Youth games swimmer Joel Watterson, leading the charge on some fantastic racing in the men’s blue riband events of the 50m and 100m freestyle both in new island record times of 23.46 and 51.05 respectively.

The 50m free was defended from Watterson’s long-time rival Brody Hewison whereas leading the chase in the 100m event was his Commonwealth Youth Games team-mate Euan Macmurchie.

Southern ASC athlete Brody Hewison continued to set personal bests with a win in the 200m butterfly from a close challenge from Douglas swimmer Peter Allen, with the bronze medal going to 12-year-old Finn Drysdale.

Special mention to nine-year-old Harry Lee who was fourth taking on probably swimming’s most revered event.

The charge continued from the younger swimmers to take championship points and the 11-and-under age group boys seems to have been dominated by Southern ASC.

Leonardo De Fort, Matthew Buxton and Panos Angelakis grabbed the lion’s share of the age group medals, whereas the girls age group has seen an emergence of talent from Ramseian SC, with Tomai Parry, Erin Corkill and Martha Broderick claiming gold medals in their favoured events.

Women’s breastroke swimming also saw a collection of strong performances, with Peel’s Steph Brew taking both women’s titles in the 50m and 100m breaststroke events.

Her return to form clearly inspired her younger IoMSC team-mates Anna Marcantoni and Izzy Watterson in second and third respectively overall, with Izzy taking the 14-15 age group and a fantastic drop in personal best times saw Kiera Prentice dominate the 12-13 age breaststroke races.

Emma Hodgson and Olivia Marshall continued to dominate the women’s 14-15 age group, with the former clinching 50m backstroke gold and Marshall taking the 800m and 200m freestyle as well as the 200m butterfly.

Blae Richardson, aged 12, joined Olivia and Emma on the podium for the 50m, 100m and 200m freestyle senior events, before going one better with silvers in the 400m and 800m freestyle events - each of these senior podiums were of course accompanied by the win in her 12-13 age group.

The newest addition to the Isle of Man Swimming Championships saw the masters competitors arrive ready to give their all, with PBs from James Wright, Mario Ricciardi and Jon Mcgowan in the 50m freestyle and Wright again in the 200m individual medley.

The latter also qualified for both super finals and improved his times in both.

The women’s medley team relay gained a matching bronze from the freestyle team from the opening weekend behind Southern and Douglas A teams.

The men’s medley team saw the return to the pool of former island record holder Alan Jones to assist his team in taking the bronze medal behind Southern and Douglas A.

National coach Lee Holland was delighted with the results:’The island championships is an excellent opportunity for our whole team to get together and compete.

’The support from Utmost Wealth, the pictures taken by Bill Dale and the live coverage from Jo Pack and The Sport Package has made this champs even more special and the athletes have absolutely risen to the occasion.

’We as coaching staff are extremely proud of what these swimmers do on a daily basis with the medals and trophies being the icing on the cake.’

The championships conclude with the 1,500m event as the 400m individual medley for women on Wednesday night.
