Conditions were near perfect for the 285 riders who turned out at the NSC for round two of the RL360 Youth Cycling League last Tuesday evening.
Before the racing got underway, Abi Richardson from RL360 presented league organiser Dot Tilbury with the company’s 2020 sponsorship cheque.
In the novice class, Rory Callister pulled away from the field at the start and was never caught.
Archie Teare outran Jasmin Holland and Parker Doyle in the fight for the runners-up spot, while Thomlyn Varley stayed clear of Thomas Broad and Brando Burdon to grab fifth. Eli Bond pipped Zoe Ramsden for eighth and Frances Hampton came home alone for 10th.
Brody Nicol had the edge on fellow frontrunners Jenson Baglow, Oliver Halligan and Arthur Ward in the tussle for the top slot in the very well-supported born 2015 and later event. Benjamin Corlett took the chasing bunch gallop for fifth ahead of George Wagstaffe, Lorelei Wilson, Albert Kelly, Ava Quirk, Aaron Fisher and Freya Curphey in sixth to 11th places respectively. Finlo Hoskisson led a second group of pursuers across the line to complete the top-12 leaderboard.
Three riders contested the finish of the born 2014 category, with Jasper Anderson eventually getting the verdict over William McAllister and Oliver Hutchinson. Leading girl Isla Kennington was a safe fourth and the fast-finishing Elliott Barron came through the field to grab fifth.
Theodore Hawley edged out Jack Cregeen for sixth and Henry Quaye outgunned Matthew Barton, Thomas Barton, Cameron Quirk, Layton Kelly and Beatrice Christian in the rush for eighth.
After breaking away together, David Leece outsprinted round one winner Austin Baglow to bag maximum points in the born 2013 age group. Ciaran Grimshaw led the chasers in to take third ahead of Euan Kinnish, James Fisher, Jackson Roberts, Jasper Cain, Aelan Morgans and Liam Lonergan. Sienna Curphey secured the girls’ prize in 10th spot.
Tommy Bass went from the gun in the born 2012 race and held his advantage all the way to the finish.
Cameron Eyres held off Poppy Clayton, Tara Nelson, Oliver Kennington and Archie Kaighin in the battle for second, with Junior Keggen coming from behind to snatch seventh from Henry Kinrade and Lewis Stephens. Corrie Brogen outpaced Millie Ward and Anthony Farthing to round off the top 10.
A fast pace throughout the born 2011 three-lapper split the field. Bernat Munoz-Fite, Sam Wolstencroft, Alex McCullagh, Bobby Davenport, Ed Pearson, Toby Costain and Abigail Cowell all came in separately to fill the top seven places.
Rory Quayle pipped Lexi Cowin for eighth and Daniel Bosendorfer was too quick for Samuel Kinnish and Jacob O’Neill in the dash for 10th.
Daniel Minay kept Brad Le Geyt and Kylan Murphy at bay in the hotly-contested sprint at the end of the born 2010 class.
Conor Madsen-Mygdal ousted Lula Kinnish and Thomas Hutchinson for fourth, while newcomer Oliver Sidebottom did well to get the better of Hugh Osborn in the struggle for seventh. Leon Polanowski and Alfie Kinrade were just behind in ninth and 10th places.
In the born 2009 and earlier grouping, Jordan Carter attacked from the start and left the rest of the field in his wheel tracks to fight over the minor placings.
Tom Pickavance in second place took the born 2009 honours ahead of Cameron Hounsell, Abi Clayton and Zach Jones.
The racing bikes had their first outing of the season. In the combined under-eight and u10s, Daniel Minay notched up his second win of the night, outsprinting Thomas Hutchinson and Oliver Sidebottom for the top spot.
Lula Kinnish was the first girl in sixth position, with Tommy Bass and Poppy Clayton the best of the under-eight boys and girls in eighth and 17th places.
In the under-12s, Deaglan Blake beat breakaway partners Freddie Griffin and Charlie Williams in the scrap for number one position.
Cameron Hounsell passed lead-out rider Poppy Clayton on the finishing straight to pick up fourth, while Zach Jones, Lewis Quirk, Tom Pickavance and Eddy Dillon wrapped up the result sheet.
Zac Walker set the under-14 and under-16 racing bikes alight with two determined attempts to get away. He was eventually reeled-in on both occasions with the race ending in a sprint finish which Tyler Annis won.
Walker was second, Niall Colquitt third and Callum Salisbury fourth.
The under-14 honours went to Oscar Gaylor in fifth place and Nicola Quaye was the top girl in ninth spot.
