Under-17s League

Manx Gems Corals 20, Suntera Global Ballasalla 1 - 27

Ballasalla started the stronger team by putting pressure on Corals’ passes, forcing them across court and picking up interceptions as Balla led 6-2 at the end of the first quarter.

The defensive pairing of Katielee Kelly and Evie Perry for Gems did well to get a few tips in the circle as Ballasalla shot with confidence and accuracy. The southerners extended their lead as Gems struggled to convert their shots as a result of defensive pressure from their opponents’ GK Brintha Yasodaron and GD Alicia Kewley. At half-time Ballasalla had extended their lead by seven goals.

The third quarter was more evenly balanced, with Gems matching Ballasalla goal-for-goal as Lexi Fitzgerald at C provided some excellent feeds into Sienna Thatcher at GA and Misha-Leigh Cooke at GS.

As such, Ballasalla retained their seven-goal lead as the quarter ended 20-13.

The final period was another even contest, with Kayleigh Denton at C for Balla working for every ball in the centre court and making some key interceptions. Emily Brown at WA and Maddison Findlay at WD for Gems battled to get the ball to their shooters.

At the final whistle, the seven-goal advantage that Ballasalla had earned in the first half proved enough to win them the game 27-20. Player of the match for Corals was Brown, while Denton took the plaudits for Ballasalla.

Ramsey Blacks 36, Suntera Global Ballasalla 2 - 6

Both teams were eager to take to the court after a few weeks’ break in the league.

Although Ramsey were quick to convert, some lovely movement in the D by Ballasalla GA Lucy Radcliffe kept the Blacks defenders busy.

Accurate shooting from Ramsey’s Katie Keenan (GA) and Isla Gale (GS) resulted in them taking an early 14-1 lead by the end of the quarter.

Ramsey centre court players continued with a strong second quarter, making the most of Amber Pullen (C), Erin Kelly (WA) and Emily Craig (WD). The centre court trio were quick to intercept the opposition ball and linked well to deliver swiftly into the D.

Despite some great interceptions by the Ballasalla defence of Charlotte Babb (GK) and Carmen Montgomery (GD) plus neat passing from their shooters Georgia Cowley (GA) and Matisse Parry (GS), the half-time score was 23-3.

Blacks’ defensive duo of Ava Brown (GD) and Reese Dalugdugan (GK) continued to control play in Ballasalla’s shooting D, only conceding a single goal in the quarter.

Balla’s own defensive structure stepped up a gear and worked hard to regain possession from Ramsey shooter Bryony Callow-Thomas whose accuracy helped Blacks conclude the third quarter with a 28-4 lead.

In the final quarter, Ramsey Blacks made changes in all areas of the court to even play. Despite an overhaul of the team and players out of position, to their surprise they made an unexpected discovery in centre court player Kitty Trenor who seemed to make easy work of finding the net at GS.

The match ended 36-6 to Ramsey Blacks and the player of the match for the northerners was Katie Keenan, while Annelise Mellor shone for Ballasalla 2.

Thompson White 13, Suntera Global Ballasalla 3 - 16

Both teams set out with a determination to win this game which manifested in the ball travelling at great speed through the court.

No sooner had the ball got to the circle edge at one end, then it was on its way back down to the other.

Ballasalla’s GK Shannon Hands and her Thompson counterpart Lydia Whylie both prevented the ball from even entering the shooting circle, which contributed to a low-scoring first quarter which ended 3-2 to Balla.

A switch up - moving Caitlin Henery to defence and Nessa Farren in to shoot - worked well for Balla but did little to separate the two teams and the score was level at half-time 6-6. A hood battle unfolded in the centre court between Lily-Louise Slade and Izzy Winchester, but great play from shooters Holly Roberts and Lucy Radcliffe kept the score level.

This game was going to be decided in the final quarter by the team that wanted it most.

Balla’s defence stepped up a gear, picking up everything loose and strong drives from Jenna Nicol supported their hard work.

Thompson GD Ruby Thompson did her best to impede the momentum of their opponents, managing to pick off a few feeds into the shooters, but it was almost always answered with an interception from Trinity Hebden or Henery.

Suntera were able to pull ahead when it mattered most and won the match 16-13. Player of the match for Thompson was Ruby Thompson and Hebden impressed for Ballasalla 3.
