Rossborough Women’s Division One leaders Bacchas A took on nearest rivals Vikings B in what was one of the most important championship games on Saturday.
With Bacchas B going into the weekend in the driving seat, anything but a win for Vikings B would have been a disaster for their title hopes.
But Vikings caused a surprise to go top of the league, although Bacchas B have a game in hand and an opportunity to take back top spot.
Elsewhere, Valkyrs C’s title hopes took a hit when Vikings C managed to salvage a draw, leaving their opponents three points behind but with two games in hand. Castletown B were held to a draw by a determined and much-improved Ramsey B side.
In Rossborough Women’s Premier League, the game of the day saw Valkyrs A take on the league’s surprise package in Castletown A.
The latter have a great defensive unit that has earned them plaudits throughout the season but they couldn’t quite hold back the team in second place.
Vikings A earned a victory over Bacchas A in what was an end-to-end match dominated by counter-attacking hockey from both sides. In the bottom half of the table Ramsey A defeated Saracens A, while Valkyrs earned a big win over Harlequins A.
Bacchas A remain in the lead in the Men’s Premier League title race by four points following Valkyrs A’s loss to Vikings A, with the whites earning their own big win against Vikings B thanks to a glut of goals from Andrew Whiting (5) and Shae Christiansen (3) amongst others.
Elsewhere Ramsey A overcame a Harlequins A side struggling at the bottom of the table, while Bacchas B defeated a Saracens A team that started the season poorly but have improved recently to challenge both Ramsey A and Bacchas B for the ’best of the rest’ tag.
Valkyrs B took a huge step towards securing the Rossborough Men’s Division One title when they defeated Harlequins B, with Neil Jacobs putting in a man-of-the-match performance with five goals.
Valkyrs now sit four points clear of the chasing pack, although closest rivals Castletown A do have a game in hand and continue to claw away at the westerners’ lead, especially after a well-earned victory against Bacchas Colts inspired by a Christian Steriopulos hat-trick.
Elsewhere, Castletown B won 3-2 in the southern derby against Saracens B in a tight game that could have gone either way.
Bacchas B were awarded the points as a result of Ramsey B being unable to field a team, but with both sides wanting to enjoy a game of hockey they shared players and played a friendly in the true spirit of Manx hockey.
The younger players continue to impress in the Rossborough Mixed Under-16s League, with Castletown improving and growing on last year’s results by overcoming Valkyrs, while Harlequins narrowly defeated Vikings and Bacchas beat Ramsey Rogues and Rascals.
Harlequins currently lead the title race with Castletown sitting four points behind them but with a game in hand.
