A six-year-old boy has been hailed a hero after dialling 999 to help rescue his mum and younger brother trapped in the bathroom.

Taylor Kneen, from Port Erin, managed to free his mother Bethan Kneen and three-year-old brother Jesse, after the lock on the door had fallen off leaving them stuck on the other side. It happened on Monday when the family were home for half-term.

Bethan Kneen, a physical education teacher from King William’s College, said: ’Louis, my 16-week-old baby, was in bed while I went for a shower and Taylor and Jesse were playing at the time.

’Taylor had taken a toy from Jesse, who then got the toy back and ran into the bathroom, locking the door behind him so his big brother couldn’t come in.

’Jesse had pulled the lock off the door, which I wasn’t worried about as long as Taylor pushed the lock out the other side.

’However, the lock had also fallen from the other side and Taylor couldn’t get it back in.’

Bethan calmly instructed her eldest child on what to do next, asking Taylor to ring his father at work using her mobile phone.

’However, he didn’t know how to ring my husband Stuart because there was a child lock on my mobile.

’He then ran around to get the attention of our neighbour, but couldn’t open her gate.

’Before I could suggest something else, Taylor had dialled 999 and began talking to the operator and said "mummy’s locked in the bathroom".’

Taylor said: ’When I called 999 on the house phone mummy was about to say something, but they had answered.

’I had tried to call daddy again, but everything that I did wasn’t working.

’My mind was going all funny and nervous.

’Mummy had heard my voice getting all worried.

’The operator told me to try and find the dummy because my baby brother was crying.’

Both Bethan and Jesse were stuck in the bathroom for approximately 40 minutes before a police officer arrived at their home.

’Taylor came downstairs and showed her where the baby was to calm him down,’ Bethan explained.

’Once he was calm, she put the lock through and we were free! It was really a last option to call 999 and Taylor was great the way he did it, as he spoke to the operator really well.

’The policewoman was absolutely brilliant and great with the kids. We were so happy she came! After she had left, Taylor told me that he wanted to be a police officer.

’While stuck in the bathroom Jesse, who had a ball said: "should we play catch?" He thought it was a big game,’ she laughed.

’The kids’ grandad is currently fixing the bathroom lock, so it never happens again.’

Family members later showed Taylor just how impressed they were with his heroic actions.

’Dad came home and said "well done" and gave me a squeezy hug,’ said Taylor.

’My grandad also got me a card with some money in it. Inside the card it says: "Good man for saving your mum!".

’I love the TT, so I might get a toy motorbike using the money,’ he added.
