A man has admitted assault after wrestling a man on the ground on North Quay in Douglas.

The defendant, Jacob Boruch Raby, 31, of Murray Road, Douglas, himself woke up in Noble’s Hospital with head injuries which he told police he had no idea how they had been sustained.

Raby will be sentenced in August after admitting assault and causing damage to property.

He appeared before High Bailiff Jayne Hughes on Tuesday.

The court heard Raby and others not before the court, were walking behind a man who had left the Saddle pub on November 28, just after 10pm.

They walked behind him along North Quay in the direction of the swing bridge.

Raby then began to throw punches at the man and attempted to kick him.

Prosecutor Barry Swain said Raby was not able to kick the man as he grabbed hold of him. They then both fell to the floor and ’wrestled’.

A security guard working nearby intervened. She pulled Raby off the man and he then left the scene.

The victim suffered ’minor bruising and scrapes’ and his phone screen was cracked.

Raby was then said to have woken up in Noble’s Hospital the next morning with head injuries, but he could not remember how he had obtained them.

He attended an interview at police headquarters. On being shown CCTV footage admitted he was the person who carried out the attack but could provide no explanation as to why he had done so.

Raby also told officers he still had no idea how he had come by his own injuries.

Defence advocate Kate Alexander asked Mrs Hughes to adjourn sentencing to allow for a probation report to be written.

Mrs Hughes adjourned the case until August 4.
