Two best friends seen fighting in the street have been fined.

Carl James Druggan and Matthew Nicholas Galovics dismissed the incident as high jinks.

But Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes said: ’There is a time and place for high jinks, usually before the age of 12 in the playground.’

On November 28 at 12.15am, police saw Druggan, of Royal Avenue West, Onchan, and Galovics, of Central Promenade, Douglas, involved in a fight with each other on Central Promenade.

Galovics, aged 28, was said to have appeared to throw two attempted punches at Druggan, aged 29, while a third man was trying to separate the pair.

They were said to have made multiple attempts to hit each other with Druggan said to have hit Galovics on the right side of his face. They were both arrested but gave a ’no comment’ interview.

Advocate Stephen Wood, representing both men in court, said that Druggan and Galovics were best friends and they had said their fight was just ’high jinks’ and that police had got the wrong end of the stick.

Mrs Hughes said: ’You can make no complaint at all in the police officer’s actions in arresting you.

’Both of you are lucky you are not before the court for more serious offences.’

Both men admitted being drunk and disorderly.

Meanwhile, Druggan admitted a second charge of being drunk and disorderly, relating to a separate incident on September 30.

Prosecutor Rebecca Cubbon told the court how police attended a disturbance outside the Courthouse bar on Athol Street at 3.50am.

Druggan was in an ongoing argument with another man which ended with the pair wrestling on the ground.

Druggan admitted fighting and hitting the other man.

He initially pleaded not guilty but on Tuesday changed his plea.

Mr Wood said: ’He would say he had been drinking in the earlier part of the day and been at a family wedding. He was in a suit and members of the party went out.

’He accepts he was intoxicated. In the Courthouse a gentleman started making fun of the suit he was wearing. Mr Druggan left the bar but the gentleman followed him and continued to shout.’

’There is evidence to suggest Mr Druggan wasn’t the main instigator,’ said the advocate.

Druggan was fined £550 and banned from buying or being sold alcohol for three months.

Galovics was fined £300.

Both men must pay £125 prosecution costs each.
