A motorist has been banned from driving for 12 months after his van crashed into a motorcycle, breaking the biker’s arm.
Damion Anthony Taggart, of The Bretney, Jurby, admitted causing serious bodily harm by driving without due care.
We previously reported that on August 26 at 12.15pm, Taggart was driving a Vauxhall Vivaro van in Ballaugh.
He approached the junction at Ballaugh bridge via Station Road and then turned right, intending to perform a U-turn to go back along the road he had driven from.
However, as he did two motorcycles were going over the bridge and Taggart’s van hit the second one, causing the biker to be thrown from his motorbike.
Taggart stopped at the scene and assisted the injured rider.
He later admitted to police that he had not been paying attention to traffic coming from that direction when he made the turn.
Fracture
The injured biker was taken to hospital where he was found to have a fractured arm.
Defence advocate Paul Glover said: ’It is our submission this was a complete and utter accident.
’Mr Taggart didn’t mean any harm.
’This momentary lapse of concentration has caused serious consequences.
’It has been on Mr Taggart’s mind for the last six weeks. Lapses of concentration can happen to anyone.
’He knows he has injured someone and is incredibly sorry.’
The advocate quoted a probation report which said that Taggart was unlikely to appear before the courts again in the future.
Taggart was also fined £750 and ordered to pay £50 prosecution costs.
He must retake his driving test at the end of the ban.
