Police have praised the bravery of victims of a sex offender who has been jailed for nine years.
Antony Carus, 57, was sentenced today after being convicted of historical sex offences against three children following a two-week trial at the Court of General Gaol Delivery.
He was found guilty of six charges, which included indecent assault and gross indecency.
His offences took place from 2001 to 2012. All took place in the Isle of Man and some involved children as young as 10.
Carus, of Castle Mona Avenue, Douglas, has been placed on the sex offenders’ register indefinitely.
Detective Sergeant Nick Haxby from the police’s public protection unit, said: ’The victims during the investigation have shown immense courage by reporting these offences to the police and continued strength to give their evidence during the court process.
’I am hoping that the conviction and sentence passed down by Deemster Birkett today will be some form of closure for those victims and their families. Being the victim of any form of sexual offence is extremely traumatic and distressing and it takes strength and courage to report such matters.’
An NSPCC spokesman said: ’It takes incredible courage for a child to tell someone they have been abused and we know it can take many years, sometimes decades, to disclose. This case highlights that no matter how much time has passed, victims can come forward and they will be listened to.’
