A company director who was celebrating his birthday has been fined £800 after telling a barman he would ’smash his head in’.
Benjamin Phillip Haslam, aged 42, of Beechwood Rise, Douglas, admitted disorderly behaviour on licensed premises and was also ordered to pay £125 costs.
Prosecuting advocate Roger Kane told the court that police received a 999 call from Jaks on November 12 at 11.18pm.
Haslam was reportedly refusing the leave the pub. However, he had done so by the time police arrived so they searched for him.
In the meantime Haslam went back into the pub and became verbally abusive, swearing at bar staff and telling one man he would take him outside and ’smash his head in’.
Haslam was arrested outside.
When interviewed later, he admitted the offence and said he was ashamed of his actions.
Defence advocate Paul Glover asked for credit to be given for his client’s guilty plea and his admissions to police.
’Mr Haslam had been out for his birthday,’ said Mr Glover. ’He had a lot of personal issues we don’t intend to go into. He was getting drinks purchased for him and unfortunately has taken on too much drunk.’
Mr Glover went on to say that Haslam was now a company director of his family business.
High Bailiff Jayne Hughes described Haslam’s behaviour as ’appalling’ and told him: ’Not only had you refused to leave in the first place but you returned and made threats to bar staff.
’I have noted you were out for your birthday but you are old enough to know how much you can drink.’
Haslam was ordered to pay the fine and costs in full by November 25.
