A motorist who crashed his car into a tram in Laxey narrowly avoided being banned.

The incident happened at the junction of the main Laxey to Ramsey road at its junction with Ham and Egg Terrace on May 6.

Gareth Roy Bouskill, aged 36, of Queen’s Pier Road, Ramsey, admitted careless driving, having two defective tyres, and having no vehicle licence.

He was fined £800 and his licence was endorsed with seven penalty points.

Prosecutor Roger Kane said police were called to the accident on May 6.

Bouskill had attempted to turn his Toyota Corolla into the terrace but hit the tram, despite it sounding its whistle.

Both the car and MER tram came to rest on the junction. No one was injured.

The vehicle test centre found the tread on both front tyres was below the legal limit.

His vehicle licence had expired on March 31.

Bouskill told police he had misjudged the timing.

He said that his son was showing him something on his phone when he heard a big bang.

Advocate Ailish Hannan asked for credit to be given for her client’s guilty plea and admissions to police.

’Mr Bouskill was taking the vehicle to sell it. He was meeting a purchaser.

’He accepts the vehicle was not licensed. He accepts he and his son were extremely fortunate not to be injured.’

Bouskill had four points on his licence so eight more would result in a disqualification.

Magistrates chair Lisa Horton told Bouskill: ’You have narrowly avoided disqualification.’
