Fire and rescue crews responded to reports of a bedroom on fire in Peel today (Saturday).

A team was dispatched at approximately 6pm to an address on Fenella Terrace, where a portable heater is thought to have set bedding alight.

Station officer David Cowley said: ’Upon arrival the officer in charge tasked two firefighters to enter the building wearing breathing apparatus to extinguish the fire which was quickly developing in the front bedroom.

’Once the fire had been extinguished a further two crew members wearing breathing apparatus were required to clear smoke from the property as well as look for any "hot spots".

’It is believed that the fire started due to a halogen heater being placed too close to bedding.

’Thankfully due to the working smoke alarms in the property the occupants were alerted to the fire and were able to escape without injury.

’We would like to remind you all to ensure that you have working smoke alarms at home and that you test them every week.

’Please also make sure that portable heaters and other ignition sources are kept well away from anything that may catch fire,’ he added.
