A 21-year-old woman was this week fined £500 for twice possessing cannabis.

Nadine Rebecca Wade, of Marathon Road, Douglas, admitted having £508-worth of the drug on November 22 and a small amount on January 21.

Prosecuting advocate Rebecca Cubbon told the court that a search warrant was executed at a flat in Marathon Road, Douglas, on November 22 at 3.28pm.

Police forced entry after no-one answered the door and Wade was found in a bedroom stuffing items in a drawer.

A search found two snap bags containing 25.4 grams of cannabis, scales, a grinder and £150 in cash.

When interviewed, Wade told police she had heard them knocking but ignored it. She said she suffered from anxiety and rarely left the flat.

She said she bought cannabis in bulk and used about three grams a day, using the scales to check the quantity. She denied selling the drug.

She was bailed by the police until January 20 but then failed to attend the police station and was arrested again.

Her flat was again searched and police found a small amount of cannabis, scales and more snap bags.

When interviewed again she said she had mental health problems and was now using seven grams of the drug per day.

The court heard that she has no previous drug-related convictions.

A probation report said that Wade had been diagnosed with narcolepsy and had mental health issues.

She told probation she was trying to ’fix herself’ by using cannabis to self-medicate.

Defence advocate Ian Kermode said: ’The quantity was quite large but was for personal use and specifically for mental health issues, particularly her anxiety.’

High Bailiff Jayne Hughes fined Wade £300 for the November offence and £200 for the January offence.

She must also pay £125 prosecution costs, which she will pay along with the fine at a rate of £10 per week deducted from benefits.
