A 22-year-old delivery driver who crashed his father’s car while he was uninsured has been fined £1,000 and banned from driving for six weeks.

Sven James Howard, of Derby Road, Douglas, admitted careless driving as well as driving without insurance and was also ordered to pay £571.63 compensation for a fence he damaged.

Prosecuting advocate James Robinson told the court that Howard was driving his father’s Land Rover Discovery on September 22 at 2.46pm at Johnny Watterson’s Lane.

As he went around a sharp corner opposite Elder Grange Nursing Home he collided with a bank causing the vehicle to drop into a field and hit a fence.

Howard called the police and was given five days to produce driving documents but admitted that he was not insured.

He told police that he was driving around the corner at around 30mph and the Land Rover had ’aquaplaned’ and he had lost control.

The court heard that he has no previous convictions.

Defence advocate Paul Glover asked for credit to be given for his client’s guilty plea and said: ’This was simply a case of Mr Howard not driving to the conditions at the time. It was a momentary lapse of concentration. Fortunately no-one was injured.

’He has a full driving licence and there is no suggestion he was under the influence of alcohol or drugs. He is currently a delivery driver so he does rely on his licence for work.

’If he was to lose his licence today he would lose his job.’

Magistrates fined Howard £350 for careless driving, and £650 for having no insurance.

He must also pay £50 costs and will pay at a rate of £50 per week.
