A 35-year-old labourer has been fined £800 after being caught with heroin and cannabis.
Tomasz Piotr Pasternak, of Belmont Terrace, admitted possession of both drugs and was also ordered to pay £125 prosecution costs.
Prosecutor James Robinson told the court how police executed a search warrant at Pasternak’s home on January 22.
Cannabis valued at £12 was found but Pasternak was not present.
Police attended the address again on March 13 and found Pasternak in a communal hallway.
He was found to have a wrap of heroin valued at £20 in his possession.
At police headquarters he handed in a prepared statement admitting possession of both drugs.
The court heard that Pasternak has previous drug-related convictions but the last was in 2016.
A probation report said that the Polish man had lived in the island for 13 years having come here for work.
He told probation that he had not touched drugs since 2016 but had recently suffered a relationship break-up and had been very depressed.
The report said that Pasternak was now adamant that he was no longer using drugs.
Defence advocate Kate Alexander asked for credit to be given for her client’s guilty plea and co-operation with police.
High Bailiff Jayne Hughes fined Pasternak £300 for cannabis possession and £500 for the heroin offence.
He will pay the fine and costs at a rate of £20 per week.
