A Ramsey man has been jailed for 10 months after admitting driving twice while he was banned and failing to stop for police.
Jason Liam Christian, of Approach Road, swerved around a policeman who was standing in the road trying to halt him.
He also admitted obtaining goods without paying, careless driving, driving with no insurance, and having a vehicle in a dangerous condition.
The Court of General Gaol Delivery heard how Christian was disqualified from driving for four years in 2014.
We previously reported how, at 1.30am on June 7, staff at EVF Petrol station on Bray Hill reported a man for driving off without paying.
CCTV footage from the garage enabled police to identify Christian as the culprit.
The 25-year-old was later seen by police driving slowly down Victoria Street, revving his engine.
A policeman wearing a high-visibility vest stood in front of Christian’s car with his hand raised indicating that he should stop.
However, Christian continued driving slowly towards him before swerving around him and driving away. Other police also tried without success to stop the car. He was eventually located and arrested.
The Clio was found abandoned with a puncture in a lane between Tent Road and Shore Road. The car was said to have had defects in the lights, tyres, exhaust, suspension, windscreen washers and brake lights.
Defence advocate Deborah Myerscough said: ’A psychiatric report has been productive and probation will work with him to address his issues, which appear to be alcohol-related.
’He is working six days a week at the prison and has been using his time wisely.’
Deemster Alistair Montgomerie said while passing sentence: ’It’s clear from your record over the last five years you’ve been in and out of prison.
’It’s equally clear you did spend a whole year out of trouble. You were in employment and had stable accommodation. What blew that all apart was your resumption of excessive use of alcohol. I would urge you to take all the assistance on offer to steer you away from alcohol.
’If you do, it’s clear you will be able to keep out of trouble. If you don’t. I’ll no doubt be seeing you again. The choice is yours.’
Christian was sentenced to five months prison for each offence of driving while disqualified to run consecutively and one month for obtaining goods without paying, to run concurrently.
No separate penalty was made for the other offences.
