A doctor has been fined £900 and banned for drink-driving in an Aston Martin.

Dr Peter George Lillywhite, of Upper Sartfell, Kirk Michael, admitted failing a breathalyser test with a reading of 57 - the legal limit is 35.

The 64-year-old was banned from driving for two years with an order to retake his test at the end of the ban.

Prosecutor Rebecca Cubbon told the court how, on November 4 at 6.24pm, police received a call reporting concerns about Lillywhite’s driving on the A3 Coast Road from Ballaugh to Sartfell.

Police went to Lillywhite’s home and asked him if he had been drinking to which he replied that he had drunk a glass of wine after arriving home.

He failed a breathalyser test at police headquarters with a reading of 80.

In a police interview Lillywhite told police he had been at the Raven pub and had consumed two pints at 3.7% each between 3.45pm and 6pm. He again said that he had drunk a glass of wine when he got home.

An expert report for the prosecution concluded the reading would have been no less than 67 but a defence expert’s report gave a reading of 57.

Ms Cubbon said the prosecution were content for Lillywhite to be sentenced on the basis of the 57 reading.

Advocate Darren Taubitz said his client had been driving for 47 years and had a clean licence.

’On the day Dr Lillywhite had been to meet friends for a social afternoon,’ said the advocate. ’The vehicle was new to him. He was still getting used to driving it on narrow roads. He has driven a short distance from the Raven to his home.

’He is embarrassed and ashamed to be in court. Being in police custody was a salutary experience. I have no doubt he won’t appear in court in future, a lesson has been well and truly learned.

He was ordered to pay £125 prosecution costs.
