A motorist has been banned from driving and fined for drink-driving after he crashed into bollards in Lord Street, Douglas.

High Bailiff Jayne Hughes said it was fortunate the accident only involved bollards - and not another person.

Ethan Clarke Benjamin, of Andreas Road, Andreas, failed a breathalyser test with a reading of 60 - the legal limit is 35.

Benjamin, aged 21, was banned from driving for two years.

Prosecutor James Robinson told the court that on March 22 at 1am, police were called to Lord Street in Douglas.

Benjamin was stood at the side of the road with some other people.

He admitted he was the driver of the car which had crashed into the bollards.

When asked if he had been drinking he told officers: ’Yes, a couple earlier.’

He was taken to police headquarters after failing the breathalyser test.

He told officers: ’I know what I did was wrong.’

Benjamin said that he had been out drinking at the new 1886 bar in Regent Street, Douglas.

He had left his car on the promenade near the Sea Terminal.

He said he then went to Bordellos and afterwards had got in his car and driven a short distance before crashing.

Benjamin represented himself in court on Tuesday.

He told High Bailiff Jayne Hughes: ’I went to Douglas to see friends and wasn’t meant to drink.

No recollection

’Then I thought I’d have a couple and leave the car.

’I don’t know why I did it. I have no recollection of driving but I have a recollection of the rest of the evening.’

Benjamin went on to say that he had since had to move out of his family home into Douglas as he worked in the capital and could no longer get to work from Andreas.

Mrs Hughes told him that it was fortunate the accident only involved bollards and not another person.

Benajmin, who admitted the charge of drink-driving, was also ordered to pay £125 prosecution costs.
